Make the South Jersey Coast Yours this Winter

Make the South Jersey Coast Yours this Winter

Colder weather brings an incredible peace and quiet to Jersey shore towns that practically reel with summer crowds months before. That means now is the perfect time to plan an off-season getaway. Imagine a world where there’s no wait at the best restaurants and no sound but the ocean just a few feet away. Spend the night at Seaview and explore the coast by day,

GALLOWAY

Bird watchers, rejoice! The Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge spans 47,000 acres and is a magnet for winter birds. Bring your binoculars to get a closer look at piping plovers, American black ducks, Atlantic brants, and so many more species that winter here in the cold months. For an afternoon away, drive to nearby Historic Smithville. This old-fashioned village features cobblestone streets, foot bridges, and more than 60 shops with toys, collectibles, clothing, candles, and food.

ATLANTIC CITY

Atlantic City’s casinos and clubs are open year-round and remain the city’s most popular destinations. But a close second is New Jersey’s tallest and the country’s third tallest lighthouse. Absecon Lighthouse accommodates visitors year round. Visit their website first for opening hours and for tour information. If you’re traveling with kids, check out the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, or animal lovers can visit the nearby Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. Check out their shop, rotating educational exhibits, and get a behind-the-scenes look at sea animals during rehabilitation.

HAMMONTON

Also in Atlantic County, Hammonton boasts a wealth of wineries and breweries open for tastings and tours throughout the winter season. Once you’ve had your fill, there’s plenty more around to keep you busy. Downtown Hammonton is a bustling center of locally owned shops and restaurants as well as the beautifully restored Eagle Theatre where you can catch an indy flic or theater production. Make time to visit White Horse Winery, too. Check their hours, tasting, and touring options online before you go. Finally, stop by for a cozy cup of goodness at Casciano Coffee, one of the best spots serving hot chocolate in South Jersey.

OCEAN CITY

Ocean City is a year-round fishing destination. While October and November are striped bass season, December and January catches include blackfish, ling, and cod. And where there are fish, there are usually sea birds! The cold weather migration season makes for great bird watching in Ocean City’s Back Bay. Also, The Asbury Avenue shopping district offers more than 100 shops and eateries– check what’s open before you go. Families will find plenty of interesting info ath the Historical Center inside Ocean City’s Public Library building and Community Center. Before you go, grab some hot caramel popcorn from Johnson’s on the boardwalk.

STONE HARBOR

Stone Harbor is perfect for families. The town has educational spots like The Wetlands Institute and the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, as well as great food. Stop by the famous Uncle Bill’s Pancake House or grab dessert at Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream. If you’re feeling brave, consider signing up for one of the city’s annual charitable traditions like the Polar Bear Plunge or Stone Harbor Shiver. Stone Harbor is right nextdoor to Avalon on Seven Mile Island; in other words, you can visit two great towns for the price of one! Bring layers to bundle up against the wind and go for a lovely walk on the beach.

CAPE MAY

Our last stop, but certainly not least desirable, is Cape May, the southernmost beach in New Jersey, and, to many, one of the most picturesque. Stop in for a wine tasting at Willow Creek Winery or craft beer samples at Cape May Brewing Company. Walk around downtown to capture photos of a bygone age and the remaining Victorian homes and businesses. Keeping in the theme of history, enjoy the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum while you’re there, as well as The Museum of Cape May County. Some of the best eateries around include The Washington Inn and Peter Shields Inn and Restaurant. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s a Beef Jerky Outlet, which offers jerky as well as jellies, jams, candy, and popcorn. Cape May is just far enough south that it’ll fell like a longer road trip without crossing state lines!

Come see the best of South Jersey’s beaches when you can have them all to yourself. ‘Winter’ at the shore and make memories for a lifetime. Book your stay at Seavew Dolce today.
